Derby 2010 Empty Derby 2010

Seems there is some slight talk about Derby Tigers, so thought I would introduce a new topic.

Derby did struggle to get a strong team this year, their moto was people who have paid registrations and train during the week get to play no matter what their standard of footy is. This means no problems with financial troubles with the WKFL that has happen in the past and these boys no matter what standard are keen to play.

Was very tough getting a team together, especially playing Friday nights in Broome, unsure how they thought we could drop work at 5pm and be ready to play by 7.30pm.

The worst was the travel, travelling every week for around about 5-6 hours is a day is to much and this deferrred most of the boys who had young families in town. The games against Looma in Derby under lights on Friday was a big hit, and Derby destoryed the Looma boys. If Derby plays next year, then the league will have to get Broome teams to play once in Derby, therefor halves the games for Derby to play in Broome. What do clubs think about that.

Lastly, Trevor Menmuir is in town and he is keen to get a Derby Football League up and going next year, so we will see what happens there. Could have 5 or 6 teams (mownajum hawks, windji storm, looma b side, derby tigers, derby high school team and even another team from derby.) You will see most of the young mownajum boys will go back to play for their own teams.

You will see some of the older guys come out and play aswell who have retired and want to play with their sons etc, and at the moment their is 9 male basketball teams in the local comp, so their is a good 60-80 players that would prob play footy.

I would like to see what clubs in Broome think about first of travelling once a year to Derby or should Derby have their own league. The better players like Altham, Maher, Bani and McPhee may be keen to keep on playing in Broome.

Derby 2010 Empty Derby 2010

Good to hear from a Derby point of view. Agree completely about the draw this season 2009. Whoever did the draw needs a bit of understanding or was there an alterior motive? My thoughts are that from a football point of view that Derby should have its own 4 team comp. We then have Derby, CKFL, there should be a league based in Halls Creek and then EKFL. It will bring more people into football. Derby has a great oval and lighting and with the right promotion could kill the pig spectator wise playing either Friday nights or Saturdays. If this was not to eventuate then Broome based teams should make the trek to Derby. This was always on the cards years ago and everyone enjoyed the venue change and the joy of flogging Derby. Bidgy and Bombers find it hard to organise transport and Towns would always winge about anything different but it is the promotion of football that counts. If some of that excess AFL money became available then travel would not be a drama. Some teams winge about the cost but they spend more money on piss than fuel. Football is about helping each other.

The reason as i understand it that Derby had to do all the travelling this year was to prove to the league that they were serious about playing footy in the WKFL (and i'm pretty sure it was Derby who suggested the idea as a way to get back in). If they made it through the etire year without forefeiting matches then 2010 would see them playing home games again.

Derby to approach the league about having home games in Derby every week, Derby and Looma will alter the weekends.
Apparently has the backing from some clubs, the league are keen to expand their games as they are the West Kimberley Football League and the Shire of Derby are behind the push aswell.
The oval at Derby as a whole new fence around the oval which looks great and secure.
Also a few ex-WAFL players could be running around for Derby Tigers, which will see them more competitive next year.
Any pre-season happenings over in Broome, I see the bulls are trying to bulk up.
